This door, seen up close before restoration, told you everything. The bottom was damaged by moisture, and the ironwork had darkened over the years. And there’s no mystery to it: the first thing is to stop and look carefully.

See where it’s suffering, which parts still hold and which no longer do. A door like this can’t be fixed quickly or easily: it has to be done piece by piece, and done properly.

Diagnosis

I started at the bottom, which is where the damage was. You have to open it up, clean it and honestly decide what can be saved and what needs to be rebuilt.

Structure

I rebuilt the base so the door has support again and doesn’t keep suffering in the same spot.

Cleaning up

I cleaned and treated the rest little by little, without overdoing it and without erasing what makes it special and old.
IV

Hardware

With the ironwork I did what I always do: take it apart, clean it, polish it, treat it and leave it just right, so it looks cared for but still stays itself.

Protection

And at the end, protection: because the job isn’t about looking nice today, it’s about still looking that way years from now.

2022 · La Rápida

A door facing the sea is beautiful, but it suffers a lot. The salt air, the sun and the moisture eat away at everything. Here the job was about thinking ahead: getting it right today, so the same problem doesn’t come back tomorrow.

Deep cleaning down to sound wood.

The ironwork was worked piece by piece, the way you treat something with years behind it: unhurried and with respect.

Protection for the outdoors, which is what makes the difference.

Drip strips were fitted for the rain, because on a door facing the sea, if water sits at the bottom, it ends up ruining everything. The drip strips let the water run off instead of pooling at the base.

Where there was moisture at the base, it was rebuilt and left solid.

2023 · Sant Jordi

This job was on a property on the outskirts of Colonia de Sant Jordi.

The same process as always — in this trade there are no shortcuts: full stripping to remove all the old layers and expose the bare wood, deep cleaning, treating and rebuilding the damaged parts, and a full treatment against woodworm and insects to cut the problem off at the root.

One detail made the difference: every original nail was removed one by one, restored, treated against corrosion and put back in place. It’s work that takes time, but it’s what keeps the door being itself.

Then, a final finish with protective outdoor product: so the wood stays nourished and ready to hold up.

The result is doors restored with all their original nails recovered, clean work, faithful to the piece and built to last.

2023 · Capdepera

This door came with years behind it: layer upon layer of paint piled on top of each other, and underneath, wood crying out for air.

Also, the bottom part, which is always the one that suffers most, was done for.

Stripping several layers of paint with a heat gun, removing them gradually without damaging the wood underneath.

Removal of all remaining residue until the surface was clean and ready.

Full reconstruction of the lower section, which was badly damaged by moisture.

Hardware: the usual process — remove, clean, treat and set up so it works well and doesn’t keep deteriorating.
V

Treatment against pests (woodworm/insects) to cut the problem off.

Final finish with a special oil-based product for exteriors, to nourish the wood and protect it from sun and the elements.

2022 · Felanitx

These doors came from an old mill on the property. The owner wanted to reuse them in his country house, and, to be honest, they were in very bad shape. The main problem here was clear: wood with damage and parts eaten by pests, and hardware that had to be recovered if the door was going to work and last.

2022 · Campos, Mallorca

In this case the work was on the doors of a very old house. The doors were stripped by hand using steel wool, without using sandpaper or aggressive machines, so as not to damage the wood.

Afterwards a treatment was applied to eliminate woodworm, and all cracks and pores were repaired.

The cast-iron door knockers were treated with the right products to protect them from corrosion and bring back their original elegance.

Although there are many types of finish, the client chose a treatment based on petroleum jelly and turpentine to nourish the wood and give it a natural colour.

2019 · Llucmajor

This door in Llucmajor didn’t need rebuilding: it needed care and a gentle hand. It needed to have what had dulled it over the years removed, letting the wood speak again, without erasing how old it is.

2020 · Llucmajor

This client wanted to repair his parents’ house and have the door return to the state he had always known it since he was a child, so we agreed not to “transform” it too much, so it would keep the presence it had always had.

Cracks

Each crack was treated individually, with the right material for each type of opening. Not just covered over: first clean the inside, then fill, and let it settle before continuing.

Cleaning

Deep cleaning to leave the surface truly ready, without residue that would later lift the finish. What you skip at this stage, you pay for later.
III

Preservation finish

A finish designed to protect without transforming: so the door stays what it is, with its colour and character, but with what it needs to hold up over time.

A sound, well-cared-for door, touched no more than necessary: which is exactly what good conservation should be.

2016 · Campos, Mallorca

These are exterior window doors with glass panes. Sometimes the glass has to be removed, as in this case, to be able to restore the door.

For windows facing outside, products are applied to protect them from sun and moisture.

2017 · Llucmajor

These doors came with their own history: the client had doors from a cowshed that had belonged to her family and wanted to bring them back for a second life and a lovely keepsake.

And when you love a door, you don’t just want it to look decent and leave it there; you want it to close well and be strong.

This was the kind of work that doesn’t show up in the first photo, but you feel it every day.

I

I took them apart from the inside, board by board, because the boards had come loose, and if you don’t go in from the inside, you can’t redo the joints and guides that connect one board to the next. If you don’t fix that, the door looks fine on the surface, but underneath it’s still wrong.

I rejoined them from the inside so the door works as a single piece, without any play.
III

I adjusted it so it closes tightly, without rubbing.
IV

I aimed for an even tone, so you can see the wood and everything looks the way it was meant to be.
V

I took apart and worked on the hardware (hinges, handles and screws): cleaning, treatment and tuning so it stops rusting and the door works smoothly and closes well.

Antique doors, yes, but sturdy and with life left in them for many years.

2018 · Llucmajor

These doors came from a country property on the outskirts of Llucmajor. The same process as always: handcrafted work. When the wood has taken a beating, you have to go step by step until it’s sound and protected.

2020 · Orient

This job was in Orient, deep in the Serra de Tramuntana, and it was one of the tricky ones. The piece is a batiport, the interior wooden frame surrounding the door, and it arrived in very bad shape: pests had eaten through it inside and the structure could no longer hold. There was no patching this one over: it had to be taken apart completely, piece by piece, rebuilt and put back together.
